Welcome to DrMichelleTeaches. Michelle Dunlap, Ph.D., is a nationally and internationally recognized educator, diversity consultant, speaker, trainer, author, editor, writing coach, and diversity-affirming evangelist. She was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. She earned a bachelor’s of science degree with honors in psychology from Wayne State University; a master’s in social psychology with an emphasis in consumer behavior, and a PhD in social psychology with an emphasis in prejudice, racism, and intergroup relations from the University of Florida. She is Emeritus Professor of Human Development, Connecticut College, having taught there for 28 years from 1994-2022. She is author or co-editor of 50 journal articles, books, chapters, and essays on the topics of retail racism, cultural competency, racial identity development, provider engagement with children and families; service learning and community engagement; multicultural issues and diversity; adolescent development and emerging adulthood, and tenure-track success. She has been invited to travel throughout the United States and to Europe to present her work. She has won local, state, and national awards for her community-engaged work, and has consulted for corporations, universities, schools, and social service and community agencies. Also extremely rewarding for her has been raising her children, serving as auntie to a host of Godchildren, and engaging in ministry work. Her most recent book is, "Retail Racism: Shopping While Black and Brown in America," (2021, Rowman & Littlefield Publishers) which offers the history, voices, and experiences of monitoring, inequity, and trauma in the consumer marketplace, as well as the many ways that consumers resist and fight back.

Having B.S., M.S. & Ph.D. training and 25+ years of consulting and speaking experience, she specializes in intergroup conflicts, race and diversity issues, and recruitment and retention.

She has earned national, state, and local recognition related to her community-engaged writings.

Dr. Michelle is a nurturing comprehensive editor, sensitivity editor, and writing coach, specializing in writers’ block, procrastination, and all aspects of the writing process. She is an accomplished author of five books and dozens of published articles and essays. She also has served as review editor for scholarly journals and books throughout her career. She now freelances as a developmental editor, proof-reader, and copy editor. She can help guide individuals or groups through their next levels of writing.
